Coca fumigation in Colombia impacts environment in Ecuador

20 February 2007

Coca fumigationEcuador is preparing a complaint against Colombia at the International Court of Justice. This is the result of large scale fumigation of coca plantations in Colombia.
?The pesticides used, ?glyfosaat?, very damaging for the environment and health, are blown across the border. It therefore makes Ecuadorian people ill and chemically pollutes their land.?
Photos published in Quito show a destroyed landscape, people in the north suffer from skin diseases and other diseases, and the authorities advise against eating fish and seafruit from the river, polluted by chemicals.
The international community should know what is going on here, says Ecuadorian minister Espinosa.
