Progress on Kalimantan
IES is instrumental in leveraging funds to prevent fires and illegal logging
15 January 2005
In 2004 the Institute for Environmental Security was instrumental in bringing the ecological problematique of the forest fires and illegal logging on Kalimantan to the attention of the Dutch parliament. This led to the adoption of an amendment to the Foreign Affairs and Development Cooperation budget committing ? 5 million for 2005 to prevent fires and illegal logging in the peat swamp forest areas of Central Kalimantan and ? 10 million structurally per year for the period afterwards. The programme for 2005 is set up in close cooperation with the relevant Indonesian authorities, the NGOs and with full participation of the local communities as the main beneficiaries.
