The guest speaker was Prof. Steven Freeland who is Professor of International Law at the University of Western Sydney, "Marie Curie Visiting Professor" at the Courts Centre of Excellence for International Courts, Denmark and Visiting Professor in International Law at the University of Copenhagen and University of Vienna.

In this lecture, Prof. Freeland discussed to what extent crimes against the environment are covered by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The key question discussed was whether there is a need to introduce a new provision so as to provide better protection against environmental crimes. The question also arose that if a new provision is needed, then what should it look like?

The Hague Environmental Law Facility (HELF) is a joint initiative of the Institute for Environmental Security (IES) and the TMC Asser Institute. HELF has been progressively developed over the years in order to contribute to the sphere of international and European environmental law especially in the area of enforcement, compliance and implementation.
