IES Chairman attends 5th International Sustainability Forum
27 August 2004
The theme of the 5th International Sustainability Forum was "Business Investment in Development". The forum, held 26-27 August 2004, was organized by the Sustainability Forum Z?rich at the Swiss Re Centre for Global Dialogue, R?schlikon.
The major focus was on how the business sector can contribute to meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). IES Chair and Director Wouter Veening, in his capacity as Senior Adviser to the Netherlands Committee for IUCN/World Conservation Union, was asked to comment on the introduction by Syngenta CEO Heinz Imhof. While fully agreeing with Mr. Imhof that increased food production should not be at the cost of existing biodiversity, from the perspective of environmental security and promoting biosafety, Wouter Veening emphasized the need to carefully apply the Precautionary Principle when new seeds and pesticides, the two product lines of Syngenta, are introduced to help solve world hunger, a main element in the first MDG.
