Major (CIMIC) Piet Wit

Maj Wit has over 30 years of experience in the integrated conservation and management of natural resources in more than 40 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia. The main focus of his work is the integration of biodiversity conservation with substainable rural development.

Maj Wit is a Functional Specialist with the CMIC group of the Dutch Army, where he specialises in reconstructing and strengthening the civil society in environmental and rual development issues during peacekeeping operations. Maj Gen was a keynote speaker at the conference "Nature in War" (Utrecht, 2000). He also presented a paper at the conference at the Peace Palace in The Hague on "Environment and Security: The role of military" in 2004 and was an invited speaker at two workshops on forests and conflicts in Brussels and Ede (The Netherlands).

Maj Wit is currently Deputy Chairman of the IUCN's Commission on Ecosystem Management, member of the Board of the Hustai National Park Trust (Mongolia), the Foundation Reserves for the Przewalski horse (The Netherlands) and the NGO Daridibo' in Guinea Bissau.

Maj Wit has been awarded Mongolia's highest recognition for nature conservation by the Minister of Nature and Environment of Mongolia. He is an honoured citizen of the Central Province of Mongolia.
