Major General (ret) Joseph Singh


Maj Gen Joseph Govinda Singh was born on June 29, 1954, and was commissioned to the Guyana Defence Force as a second Lieutenant in June 1966. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 1972, Lieutenant Colonel in 1975, Colonel in 1979, Brigadier in 1986 and Major General in January 1999.

During his tenure, Maj Gen Singh held several command and staff appointments, among which were Platoon Commander 1 GDF'C' Company, Officer Commander 2 GDF 6 Company, Adjutant (acting) 2 Battalion, General Staff Officer 2 Operations and Training, General Staff Officer Grade 1, Commanding Officer Border Operations Command, Commander (acting) 1 Infantry Brigade and Director General Guyana National Service.

He was appointed chief of staff in 1990 and retired in April 2000. He holds a Diploma in Public Administration from the University of Guyana and he is the recipient of several awards including The Military Service Star, the Military Service Medal, the Border Defence Medal, the Military Efficiency Medal, the Twenty-fifth Anniversary Medal and the Independence Medal. He was also awarded the Medal of Merit (Brazil), the Star of Carabobo and the Army Cross (Venezuela).
