The Network

The European Working Group on Amazonia (EWGA) is a network of around 250 organisations and individuals concerned with the ecological and socio-cultural issues in the Amazon region. While most of these organisations are located in Europe, there are many members in the Amazon states as well as relevant organisations in North America and Japan.

While all members have their own programme with specific activities concerning Amazonia, EWGA functions as a platform through which activities can be coordinated. especially in the fields of protecting the ecology, the indigenous communities and human rights.

A core group of EWGA meets one to two times per year. Recent meetings focused on the Pilot Programme for Amazonia with information presented by EC officials and NGOs. Other topics include regular review of the situation in each of the Amazonia countries and planning of joint activities.
